The 2017 Season of “A Stage of Our Own” theater collective opens with a special version of “Twelve Nights with Viola & Olivia” by local playwright Hannah Miyamoto.
In an enchanted town during the Italian Renaissance, a beautiful countess meets a boy, falls in love, and ask him to marry her. However, her true love is really a girl. “Twelve Nights with Viola & Olivia” retells the story of the love between two noblewomen in Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” features the Elizabethan verse of writer Hannah Miyamoto to challenge the notion that same-sex relationships are contrary to the “traditional values” of Anglo-American society.
“Twelve Nights with Viola & Olivia” stars local favorites M. Susan Peck as Judith, the poet-sister of Shakespeare, and Patricia Elmore Costa as Maria, lady of Olivia’s bedchamber, while introducing Rhiannon McAffee as Gentlewoman Viola and Jacqueline Sailer as Countess Olivia.
“Twelve Nights with Viola & Olivia” will be performed during the San Diego International Fringe Festival, between June 22 and July 2. Dates and times will be announced when set by the Fringe Festival. All performances will be at Rosewood Five Studio, 1150 7th Ave. in downtown San Diego.
